Mark Malloch-Brown was political correspondent at The Economist between 1977 and 1979, and founding editor of the Economist Development Report. He then worked for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.



In 1986 Malloch Brown joined the Sawyer-Miller Group as the lead international partner. In 1994 he became Vice-President for External Affairs at the World Bank, which included responsibility for relations with the United Nations. In 1999 he was appointed Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).




In January 2005 Malloch Brown was appointed Chef de Cabinet to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. He became United Nations Deputy Secretary-General in 2006, and was knighted in the British New Year Honours 2007.



In June 2007 he joined the UK Government as Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) with responsibility for Africa, Asia and the United Nations. He resigned at the end of July 2009, and is now an advisor to the World Economic Forum.
